The Italian Barrel, an intimate Northern Italian restaurant located at 1240 Decatur Street in New Orleans' French Quarter, has been honored with the 2026 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. This recognition is part of Wine Spectator's annual Restaurant Awards, which celebrate the world's best restaurants for wine. The award highlights establishments that offer well-chosen wine lists with at least 75 selections, matched thematically to the menu in both price and style.
According to Marvin R. Shanken, Chairman and CEO of Wine Spectator, the restaurant industry is rapidly evolving as diners become more selective about their drinking habits. "As wine drinkers grow more mindful, restaurants are adapting with creative wine programs," Shanken said. "Congratulations to the 4,012 restaurants that earned a Restaurant Award and continue to elevate the wine experience for guests around the world."
Co-owners Lori and Kevin Cates expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing that wine is integral to the dining experience at The Italian Barrel. "Wine is part of the natural rhythm of a meal at The Italian Barrel—not an afterthought, but something to explore slowly, share generously and enjoy course by course," they said. "This recognition belongs to our entire team, whose knowledge, care and hospitality make every bottle and every table feel personal."
The Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards, launched in 1981, feature three levels: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence, and the Grand Award. This year, 2,083 restaurants received the Award of Excellence, 1,830 earned the Best of Award of Excellence, and 99 achieved the Grand Award. The Italian Barrel joins the ranks of award-winning programs that prioritize quality and service.
The award underscores the importance of wine programs in enhancing the dining experience. For The Italian Barrel, founded by Verona-born Chef Samantha Castagnetti and now stewarded by the Cates, the recognition validates their commitment to Northern Italian traditions, seasonal pastas, and a deeply Italian wine list. The restaurant offers indoor and heated outdoor seating, inviting guests to slow down and enjoy a meal designed to linger.
Wine Spectator's special Restaurant Awards issue will be available on newsstands July 21, 2026.
