Torino Metals Pty Ltd., a privately held mineral exploration company, has announced a maiden Inferred Mineral Resource Estimate for its wholly owned Zonda copper-gold porphyry project in San Juan Province, Argentina. The estimate, prepared in accordance with National Instrument 43-101, totals 615 million tonnes grading 0.34% copper equivalent, containing 2.824 billion pounds of copper and 2.88 million ounces of gold, or approximately 4.55 billion pounds of copper equivalent. For a private explorer, the scale of the headline metal content is significant because it establishes Zonda as a district-scale porphyry system and gives the company a tangible asset base against which future financing, partnership or development discussions can be framed.
The resource is constrained within an optimized open-pit shell and includes a higher-grade zone of 338 million tonnes grading 0.41% copper equivalent, containing 1.92 billion pounds of copper and 1.86 million ounces of gold. That higher-grade component matters because it represents roughly 55% of the contained copper and 65% of the contained gold within just over half the tonnage, offering a potential early-mine phase that could improve project economics. The Zonda deposit begins at or near surface, with an estimated strip ratio of approximately 0.5:1, meaning only half a tonne of waste would need to be moved for each tonne of mineralized material. Low strip ratios are a key cost driver in open-pit mining, and a ratio this low at surface can materially reduce operating costs and capital intensity compared with deeper deposits.
Torino completed five diamond twin holes totaling 908 meters during its 2026 drilling campaign to validate historical exploration data. The company reported that 21 of 30 historical drill holes ended in mineralization, with the deposit remaining open at depth and laterally. Those twin holes are important because they confirm that historical data can be relied upon under NI 43-101 standards, while the open-ended nature of the mineralization points to further resource growth potential through additional drilling. The resource estimate has an effective date of Oct. 13, 2026, and was prepared by independent qualified person Marcelo Zangrandi of AMBA Consultoria Ltda. Torino noted that mineral resources are not mineral reserves and have not demonstrated economic viability, a standard caution that nonetheless frames the next steps the company must take to advance Zonda.
The announcement positions Zonda within Argentina's San Juan Province, a jurisdiction with a established copper-gold porphyry mining history, and gives Torino a platform to pursue permitting, metallurgical and economic studies. For investors tracking early-stage copper assets, the combination of a multi-billion-pound resource, a high-grade core and a low strip ratio is likely to be the central takeaway. Full details of the resource estimate are available in the complete press release.
