The Marine Toys for Tots Literacy Program is tackling the educational disparities faced by children in low-income communities through its Operation Turn the Page initiative, a nationwide back-to-school effort that distributes books to underserved children. The program, which has provided more than 63 million books and educational resources since 2008, aims to ensure that children return to the classroom ready to learn after the summer break.
The need for such initiatives is critical: in low-income areas, there may be only one age-appropriate book for every 300 children. This scarcity can hinder literacy development and exacerbate summer learning loss, making it harder for students to transition back to school. Operation Turn the Page directly addresses this by providing books throughout the summer, helping children maintain and improve their reading skills.
Lieutenant General Jim Laster, U.S. Marines (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, emphasized the transformative power of a single book. "A single book may seem like a small gift, but for a child impacted by summer learning loss, it can open the door to possibilities they never knew existed," he said. "When children living in low-income communities have access to books throughout the summer, they return to school more confident, engaged, and prepared to learn. When you give a book, you unlock a future."
The initiative's impact is reflected in the stories from schools that have participated. A teacher at Freedom Trail Elementary noted, "For many of our students, receiving these books means more than just reading—it’s the beginning of their first home library and a lifelong love of learning." At United Elementary, the distribution of over 400 books created excitement and a growing love of reading both in school and at home. At Entheos Academy, a student's face lit up with wonder upon finding a book about baseball, illustrating how the right book can spark a passion for reading.
Operation Turn the Page is not just about distributing books; it's about creating opportunities for academic success and a brighter future.
