Trilogy Metals Secures US$35.6 Million U.S. Government Strategic Investment to Advance Alaska Mining Projects

Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) has completed a strategic equity investment from the U.S. Department of War totaling approximately US$35.6 million. The investment, made across transactions with Trilogy and South32 Limited, will be fully committed to Ambler Metals LLC, their 50/50 joint venture, to advance exploration and development of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) in northwestern Alaska. This includes the high-grade Arctic polymetallic deposit and the Bornite copper-cobalt deposit.

The U.S. government's involvement underscores the strategic importance of securing domestic supplies of critical minerals such as copper and cobalt, which are essential for national security, renewable energy technologies, and electric vehicles. The Department of War has also committed to work in good faith to help facilitate financing for construction of the proposed 211-mile Ambler Road in coordination with the State of Alaska and the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority.

The UKMP is located within the Ambler Mining District, one of the richest and most prospective known copper-dominant districts in the world. It hosts polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits with high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization. Exploration efforts have focused on the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit, both within a land package spanning approximately 190,929 hectares.

Ambler Metals has an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., an Alaska Native Corporation, providing a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities. Trilogy Metals' vision is to develop the Ambler Mining District into a premier North American copper producer while protecting and respecting subsistence livelihoods.

The investment and the potential development of the Ambler Road are significant for several reasons. First, it represents a direct U.S. government effort to secure a domestic supply chain for critical minerals, reducing reliance on foreign sources, particularly China, which dominates global copper and cobalt processing. Second, the Ambler Road is a controversial infrastructure project that has been debated for years due to environmental and subsistence concerns. The government's commitment to facilitate financing could accelerate its construction, but it also raises questions about the balance between resource development and environmental protection.

Third, the involvement of South32, a globally diversified mining and metals company, adds financial and operational credibility to the venture. South32 exercised its option to form the joint venture in December 2019, and its continued participation signals confidence in the projects' potential.

For investors, the news is a positive development for Trilogy Metals, as it provides non-dilutive funding and a strong partner in the U.S. government. The strategic investment could also lead to further government support and streamlined permitting. However, risks remain, including permitting challenges, environmental opposition, and commodity price volatility.
