UGI Utilities, Inc. announced on Thursday that it will begin a natural gas main replacement project in Hazleton starting Monday, October 6, 2025. The system upgrades are part of UGI's ongoing commitment to provide safe and reliable service, according to a company press release.
The underground work will take place on several streets, including North James Street between West 17th Street and West 11th Street, West 15th Street between Hanover Court and North Penn Court, West 14th Street between North James Street and North Penn Court, West 13th Street between Hanover Court and North James Street, and West 12th Street between Hanover Court and North James Street. Construction is scheduled Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Drivers, residents, and business owners in the area should anticipate road closures, detours, and parking restrictions. There will be some interruptions to natural gas service, which will require UGI to access properties to inspect and relight equipment. The installation of the new natural gas main is expected to be completed by the end of December. Temporary restoration of the area will occur immediately after the underground work is finished, with final paving to be completed at a later date.
This project also presents an opportunity for some homes and businesses along the route to convert to natural gas. UGI encourages anyone interested in converting to natural gas to contact the company at 800-276-2722 or gasconversion@ugi.com.
