UN Poverty Commemoration Highlights Housing as a Human Right

The 34th Commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty at United Nations Headquarters in New York brought together international organizations, diplomats, advocates, and civil society representatives to confront the persistent global challenge of poverty. Held on October 16, one day before the official observance on October 17, the event underscored that poverty is not merely an economic condition but a violation of human dignity and rights.

Central to the discussions was the recognition of adequate housing as a fundamental human right. Speakers emphasized that access to safe, affordable housing is essential for individuals and families to live with dignity and security, and that housing insecurity traps people in cycles of poverty, reinforcing inequality and harming mental and physical health. The event highlighted the interconnectedness of housing with health, education, employment, and overall well-being, making it clear that decent housing is a cornerstone of human development.

Star Cleopatra Fitzgerald® attended the commemoration, wearing a red United Nations Gender Equality lanyard as a symbol of peace, inclusion, and equal opportunity. Her presence reflected the broader vision that reducing inequality, promoting human rights, and advancing gender equality are critical components in the fight to eradicate poverty. Fitzgerald's stance that housing should be safe, secure, and free from violence and exploitation resonates with the event's emphasis on protecting vulnerable populations from coercion and trafficking.

The commemoration also addressed the growing challenges affecting housing worldwide, including population growth, conflict, displacement, urbanization, environmental degradation, climate change, and natural disasters. Speakers described how war, insecurity, and forced migration continue to displace vulnerable populations and strain housing systems. Personal testimonies, such as one from a parent struggling with inadequate housing for seven children, added a human dimension, illustrating the urgent need for practical policies and support systems.

Former French Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont reflected on the principles of Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité, linking them to international efforts to promote dignity, equality, and solidarity. His remarks underscored the importance of political commitment and respect for economic, social, cultural, and civil rights in advancing the vision of the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The event, moderated by Bani Dugal and Thani Brown, was organized by a coalition including ATD Fourth World International, the Permanent Mission of France to the UN, UN DESA, OHCHR, UN-Habitat, LP4Y, MAIN, and the Bahá'í International Community.

Following the formal program, attendees gathered in the UN North Garden to pay respects at the commemorative stone dedicated to victims of extreme poverty and joined in a unity song. The gathering served as a reminder that eradicating poverty requires collective action, sound policies, and a continued commitment to ensuring that every individual can live in safety, dignity, and hope.
