In an effort to bridge divides and foster dialogue across Los Angeles neighborhoods, United in Peace hosts monthly Peace Rides that bring together motorcyclists, low-riders, clergy, community leaders, and residents. These processions travel through areas that have experienced violence or division, distributing peace-oriented materials such as The Way to Happiness booklet and the Million Man March pledge. The initiative aims to help people see one another as members of the same community, encouraging understanding, respect, and cooperation.
The Peace Rides conclude with a Peace Festival, featuring professional performers in hip-hop, R&B, and gospel, along with local talent. The organization describes this approach as “edutainment,” combining education, community engagement, and entertainment to create an environment where people can connect. The Los Angeles Police Department supports the rides by assisting with safety along designated routes and neighborhood stops. During the monthly events, residents often come outside to wave, make peace signs, and show support, reflecting the growing familiarity of the Peace Rides within the communities they visit.
For over 14 years, the United in Peace Foundation, a multiethnic and multi-faith movement, has organized these recurring events. The organization reports distributing more than 70,000 copies of The Way to Happiness and reaching more than 2.4 million people through the events and related media coverage. Notably, an LAPD captain has noted that the violent death rate in South Los Angeles decreased at times by as much as 40% over the same 14-year period. While many factors contribute to changes in community violence, United in Peace believes its sustained efforts to promote unity and peaceful cooperation play a meaningful role.
Mayors from multiple cities and members of Congress have issued commendations and proclamations recognizing the organization's efforts. The Peace Rides have also received support from the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International, which has attended the rides and provided The Way to Happiness booklets, written by L. Ron Hubbard, Humanitarian and Founder of the Scientology Religion.
The impact of these rides extends beyond the events themselves, fostering a sense of community and encouraging residents to engage with one another in a spirit of goodwill. By challenging perceptions that divide communities, United in Peace aims to take meaningful steps toward lasting peace. The organization welcomes partnerships with nonprofit organizations, community groups, congregations, and civic leaders who share a commitment to building safer, more connected communities.
